Siargao Airport (officially Sayak Airport, IATA code: IAO) is your gateway to paradise. Unlike large international hubs, IAO is a small, charming provincial airport that handles the surge of surfers, tourists, and island-hoppers arriving daily. While its size adds to the island's charm, navigating your arrival can be chaotic if you aren't prepared. Here's everything you need to know to start your Siargao vacation smoothly.

Stay 5 minutes from the airport. Skip the chaos, skip the 45-minute drive to General Luna, and start your vacation the moment you land. View rooms near the airport.

Airlines Serving Siargao Airport

Three major airlines currently operate flights to Siargao:

  • Cebgo (operated for Cebu Pacific) – frequent flights from Cebu and Clark to Siargao; some connections from Manila via these hubs, subject to schedule changes. Cebgo also operates a Davao–Siargao route, useful if you're coming from Mindanao.
  • Philippine Airlines (PAL) – flights to Siargao routed via Clark/Cebu; Manila turboprop services are being moved to Clark as of early 2026.
  • Sunlight Air – routes from Cebu and Clark to Siargao; Manila services, if any, are seasonal and subject to change. Always check the latest schedule.

Attention: Make sure your ticket is to Siargao (IAO) and not Surigao City (SUG) on the mainland – they are different airports, and flying to Surigao requires an additional ferry to reach Siargao.

Clark Gateway: With turboprop flights shifting away from Manila, Clark has become a key gateway for Siargao. If you’re coming from Luzon, it’s often easier to fly Clark–Siargao and reach Clark from Manila by P2P bus (about 2–3 hours).

Pro Tip: Book early, as flights fill up quickly and prices surge during key seasons:

  • Surf season peaks roughly from August to November (bigger swells).
  • Dry and family high season runs around March–May.
  • Overall peak crowds are usually in December holidays and March–May.

Consider flying on weekdays for better rates.

What to Expect Upon Arrival

Siargao Airport is refreshingly simple—but that simplicity comes with some quirks:

  • Walk from the plane — You'll walk across the tarmac to the terminal (bring sunglasses!)
  • Baggage claim — Expect 15-20 minutes for luggage to appear in a small carousel for baggage collection.
  • Environmental/tourism fee – on arrival, you may be asked to pay a small local environmental or tourism fee of around ₱20 per person. This is collected by the LGU and may be waived for local residents with valid ID.
  • Terminal fee – domestic terminal fees (often around ₱150) are usually already included in your airline ticket and are paid on departure, not on arrival. Check your booking details to confirm.
  • Small terminal — One exit leads directly to the pickup area filled with drivers. Sayak Airport is undergoing terminal expansion to increase passenger capacity, so you may see some construction, but facilities are gradually improving.
  • Limited facilities — Basic restrooms and a small store. There is no ATM inside the airport terminal. ATMs on Siargao are mostly in General Luna and Dapa and can run out of cash, especially on weekends and during peak season. Bring enough cash from Manila/Cebu for your first few days, and use GCash or cards only as backup.

Ground Transportation Options

Once you exit the terminal, you'll be greeted by a crowd of eager van and tricycle drivers. Here's what to expect:

Shared Vans to General Luna

  • Cost: ₱300-₱400 per person
  • Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Pros: Affordable, meets other travelers
  • Cons: Waits until van is full, cramped with luggage, no control over stops

Private Van Hire

  • Cost: ₱2,000-₱2,500 (entire vehicle)
  • Duration: 40-50 minutes
  • Pros: Immediate departure, comfortable, can make stops
  • Cons: More expensive for solo travelers

Tricycle

  • Cost: ₱50-₱100 for short distances (Del Carmen)
  • Best For: Nearby destinations like Del Carmen (5-10 minutes away)
  • Note: Not recommended for General Luna—too far and uncomfortable with luggage

Pro Tip: Planning to rent a motorcycle? Rent it near the airport in Del Carmen instead of in General Luna. This saves you hassle when departing—you can return the motorcycle near the airport and avoid extra trips on your last day. See our Transportation Guide for complete motorcycle rental details.

The "Del Carmen First" Strategy

🧠 Smart Traveler Insight: Most tourists rush straight to General Luna, enduring a 45+ minute cramped van ride after a long flight. But here's the local secret: Del Carmen is only 5-10 minutes from the airport (see why this matters in our Del Carmen vs General Luna comparison).

Consider this smarter approach:

  1. Book your first 1-2 nights in Del Carmen — Settle in immediately after your flight with zero stress
  2. Visit Sugba Lagoon the next morning — You'll be first on the water while GL tourists are still in transit
  3. Explore the Mangrove Boardwalk — Right at the Del Carmen port, no extra travel needed
  4. Relax at Alegria Beach for a calm, family-friendly swim — About 40-45 minutes from Del Carmen by motorbike
  5. Explore Pacifico Beach on the north coast for surfing and pristine scenery — 40-45 minutes from Del Carmen
  6. Move to General Luna refreshed — After 1-2 days, you'll know the island and be ready for the surfing scene
